Happy 58th Birthday, Daddy...

today is daddy's 58th birthday...
suddenly i realised that he seems to have aged quite a bit in the last few years...
and physically he is having aches on his legs... and could not walk too much...

wanted to get him an Acer notebook but it came pre-installed with Windows Vista which he is unfamiliar with...
wanted to buy him a mobile phone but he prefer to wait for his current contract to expire...
finally gave him an ang pao so that he can buy the things he like...

we love each other, that is for certain...
but we do not show it in the conventional way...

i seriously have to learn to express myself more to daddy...
he is not getting any younger...

Happy Birthday, Daddy...

dinner was at Coca Restaurant at Takashimaya...
suddenly daddy has cravings for steamboat...
all of us enjoyed the food very much...

Easter Sunday...

Easter Sunday was spent getting my facial done @ Bella...
as my current package is ending, the boss was trying to convince me to sign up for another package...
resisted by giving excuses (e.g. financial difficulties lah, hard to book slots @ Bella lah, therapists not good lah)...
am looking at other centres before deciding on whether i should continue...

wanted to go for the Times Book Sale @ Expo...
but was too lazy to do any long distance travelling...
came home and decided to go for a run...

my first run in months... since the Standard Chartered half marathon in December...
only managed 7.5km in 53 minutes...
very bad timing... gotta work harder...
got a lot of phlegm in my throat after the run...

signed up for the Passion Run in June 2008...
will be signing up for the Army Half Marathon in August 2008...
and also the Standard Chartered half marathon in December 2008...
that should be all for 2008...

Lost Boys Gathering @ Marine Crescent...

our second Lost Boys gathering for the year...
first it was CNY @ Joseph's place in February...
and now it was Teck Han who hosted us on the day after Good Friday...

lunch was KFC...
16 pieces for 3 of us...
could not finish and had KFC for dinner as well...

glad that Kok Chew made it this time...
the last time i saw him was two years ago at my place for CNY...

Keng Wee was busy with his assignments and could not join us...
Kang Chong also missed it this time...

played two rounds of ever-slow mahjong and won S$50...

during dinner, Joseph actually walked into one of the glass panels and hurt his nose...
OUCH!!

next stop will be Keng Wee's new place in Potong Pasir...
must fix a date with him soon...

Good Friday 2008...

had a wonderful Good Friday long weekend in Singapore...
did not plan any overseas trip for this period...

the eve was spent watching Rule #1...
yet another the horror movie by Kelvin Tong...
personally i enjoyed The Maid a lot, hence decided to go along with Kerry on this movie...

entertaining and scary enough...
although the twist at the end left me with questions...
so the dance scene between Ekin Cheng and his wife did not happen eh??
Fiona Xie is nothing but an extra in the movie...
her acting was bad... and the dubbing made her sound like a robot... without feelings...

Good Friday was spent lunching with my AGO ex-colleagues...
i was busy entertaining Ming's son Lucien that i did not get to chit chat much with Ming and Ju...
Ming is a tai tai now while Ju is still working as hard as ever...
Ju, please get to relax more, ok??

next was tea with the Ugly Dolls at the same place, Sun With Moon...
kinda funny to be having lunch and tea at the same place...
was discussing about Kenneth's birthday celebrations...
the guest list now stands at 11 with two more maybes...

after shopping at Tangs, we decided to catch a movie, The Orphanage...
another horror movie... this time in Spanish...
quite a simple plot but the movie was intense...
a mother's love for her son never dies...
until she sees the dead son...

after movie, we had our proper meal at SBC food court, the underground one next to Palais Renaissance...
ordered my favourite satay bee hoon, mee goreng, hor fun and deep fried baby squids...

took the MRT home after that...
on the bus from AMk, i was busy checking out the two books i bought from Borders...
Paulo Coelho's The Witch Of Portobello and Jeffrey Deaver's The Sleeping Doll...

18 March 2008

Colbie Callait Showcase @ Movida...

got 2 VIP invites to the showcase...
got Kerry to join me...
my first time to St James Powerstation...
quite a nice experience...
except for the queuing part to collect the invites...

VIP has its privileges...
free flow of Grand Master Flash...
some potent concoction that i can still feel inside me after 3 hours...
free flow of cranberry, orange or lime juice...
free flow of soft drinks...
and they had finger food for free too!!

i first heard Colbie while watching MTV in the hotel room in Jakarta...
Bubbly blew my mind away with its simple tune...
sort of reminded me of Juno the movie...

quite a nice showcase...
and her songs made me feel lovey dovey...

the showcase was rather short...
less than an hour...
even the waiting time took more than that...
we didn't stay for the Up Close With Colbie session...
needed to feed the stomach...
had dinner at Asian Kitchen Vivocity...
before heading home...

Hall of Fame says Madonna is a natural for induction...

Hall of Fame says Madonna is a natural for induction

Madonna has been many things in her 26-year career.

The Material Girl has been a pop star, a video star, a movie star, a singer, a songwriter, an author, a dancer, a label exec, a producer and, most recently, a director.

Calling her a rocker, though, is a bit of a stretch.

Yes, there are a handful of borderline rock songs in her catalog and she did learn the guitar for her "Music" tour. But Madonna is a pop star. When she looks for new musical inspiration, it has almost always come from the dance clubs, embracing electronica and Europop instead of rock.

Does that mean Madonna should be excluded from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame? Of course not.

"To me, it's the same issue as last year with Grandmaster Flash and `does hip-hop belong in?'" says Jim Henke, vice president of exhibitions and curatorial affairs at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland. "I think here at the museum and among other inductees, we've always defined rock and roll pretty broadly.

"It's not just about four guys with guitars or something like that. Madonna certainly had a huge impact on popular music and rock `n' roll throughout the `80s and `90s and she's certainly deserving of being honored."

Henke points to Madonna's music, her incorporation of dance elements and her mixing of styles that influenced lots of performers that came after her.

Her biggest contribution, though, was her music videos.

"Madonna takes us into a new era," says Rick Krim, VH1's executive vice president for music and talent programming. "As the years go on, the new eligibles from the MTV era will be different from those who came before them. They will be different from the Ventures or the Dave Clark Five. And Madonna emerged as one of the icons of the video era."

When Madonna made her debut in 1982 with the dance single "Everybody," she seemed like just another dance pop singer, like the countless ones who would follow, from Regina and Martika to Stacey Q and Pebbles.

Once she figured out how to use music videos to sell her image as well as her songs, Madonna, with the help of MTV, was soon in a league of her own.

Established performers who adapted well to music videos improved their careers, but Madonna was the first superstar to be launched on MTV.

"Other acts, like Michael Jackson or Prince, saw their careers taken to another level by videos on MTV," says Krim, who worked at MTV in its early days. "Madonna was born there. She always pushed the limits. Her videos never looked like something somebody else did. We always took everything she did really seriously and we still do."

Starting with "Borderline" in 1984, Madonna turned her videos into events. Teenage girls - dubbed Madonna "wannabes" - quickly copied her various styles, from the crucifixes to the rubber bracelets to the mesh shirts and the underwear as outerwear trends.

Madonna videos became just as important as the songs they represented, sometimes becoming more attention-getting than the songs, either with the controversial "Like a Prayer" and "What It Feels Like for a Girl" clips or the artistic, culture-shaping videos for "Express Yourself" and "Ray of Light," which influenced video and filmmaking styles.

"She is still a musical and cultural icon," Krim says. "She's always finding a way to impact culture and changing with the times, someone who, despite having plenty of exposure, still has a mystique about her. She's a smart woman and done an amazing job managing that career and still having people wanting to see more and hear more. She's not settling back and relying on what she's done in the past. She's always looking ahead."

While induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is seen by many as the culmination of a career, Madonna is still moving forward with hers.

Her new album, "Hard Candy" (Warner Bros.), due next month, includes a rumored duet with Justin Timberlake, who will induct her into the Rock Hall. And Krim says it continues the Madonna tradition of pushing the envelope.

"It sounds great - it's very 2008," he says. "But it's still very Madonna. She's growing with the times. She's not an oldies act. There's still a lot of anticipation for her new album. Every time she releases a new video, it will be an event and we're going to treat it that way. I believe MTV will, too. She still has a place on MTV and not many 49-year-old artists can say, that even though a lot of them would like to."

And Madonna is set to push a new envelope, signing a new $120-million business agreement with concert promoter and venue owner Live Nation that makes her the first major artist to partner with a nonmusic company for all her music-related businesses, from her tours to her future album releases.

"Madonna is a true icon and maverick as an artist and in business," Live Nation CEO Michael Rapino said in a statement. "Our partnership is a defining moment in music history. I am thrilled that Madonna, who is also now a shareholder in our company, has joined with us to create a new business model for our industry."

In a statement, Madonna said she felt the new partnership created more opportunities than the traditional major-label model.

"For the first time in my career, the way that my music can reach my fans is unlimited," she says. "I've never wanted to think in a limited way and with this new partnership, the possibilities are endless. Live Nation has offered me a true partnership and after 25 years in the business, I feel that I deserve that."

Apparently, Madonna isn't through attaching new job titles to her resume just yet.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction takes place Monday at 8 p.m. EST at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in Manhattan. VH1 Classic will air a live simulcast of the event beginning at 8:30 p.m.

CNN: Should Madonna be inducted to Rock and Roll Hall?

NEW YORK (AP) -- Admit it. When Madonna was writhing around onstage in a wedding gown to "Like a Virgin" years ago, the last place you'd expect to see her was in something called the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Some people think Madonna's induction in her first year of elibigility is not appropriate.

Time has a way of changing things. On Monday, Madge will come to the stage of the Waldorf-Astoria to accept enshrinement. Classmate John Mellencamp, who also churned out hit after hit in the 1980s, will join her.

The Dave Clark Five, whose lead singer Mike Smith died of pneumonia on Feb. 28, are being inducted as well as Philly soul legends Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff, Canadian songwriter Leonard Cohen, surf rockers the Ventures and blues harmonica ace Little Walter.

But Madonna?

She's the pre-eminent pop star of her generation, who stayed a step ahead of trends while adding in shock value to keep herself in the news. Along the way she's made sturdy, state-of-the-art pop such as "Material Girl," "Crazy For You," "Papa Don't Preach," "Cherish," "Like a Prayer," "Vogue" and "Ray of Light."

Yet "if you think of rock 'n' roll, Madonna is not the first name that comes to mind," said Steve Morse, longtime Boston Globe music critic who was a member of the hall of fame's nominating committee for seven years.

He considers her selection, particularly in her first year of eligibility, an embarrassment.

Her music was never played on rock 'n' roll radio, he said. Some veteran rock artists like Deep Purple, the J. Geils Band, Steve Miller and Alice Cooper are still waiting for induction. Morse long and unsuccessfully argued on behalf of the late Gram Parsons.

Don't Miss

"It seems like this is driven by commercial achievement and sales, rather than having anything to do with the rock 'n' roll genre," Morse said. "It's really a commercial move. They'll be able to sell more tickets to the museum and more people will watch the broadcast."

With rock's founding fathers already in the hall, the museum has broadened its meaning of rock 'n' roll to include rap and pop artists. Grandmaster Flash last year became the first hip-hop artist to make it.

Madonna, who declined interview requests, will answer on Monday night.

She's being inducted by Justin Timberlake. And unlike many contemporary artists -- Madonna's new album, "Hard Candy," is dropping April 29 -- she's not scheduled to perform. Instead, she chose Iggy Pop, the ultimate crawl-around-on-glass punk rocker who shares her Michigan ancestry, to salute her work.

Tom Hanks will induct the Dave Clark Five, the '60s British pop band behind the hit "Glad All Over." Billy Joel will give the speech for Mellencamp, and Lou Reed speaks on behalf of fellow literate songwriter Cohen.

For the second straight year, VH1 Classic will show the induction ceremony live at 8:30 p.m. EDT.

MacRitchie Treetop Walk 2008...

left Shaun's place at 7:30am...
breakfast @ Ah Mei...
reached MacRitchie around 8:30am...
Jonathan and Keng Hock were already there...
Jason arrived late while Thyetus was super late cos he overslept... hahahaha...
David could not join us cos he was not feeling well...

the walk was superb...
with the weather being unusually kind to us...
not sunny hot... and no rain...
by the time we finished with the Treetop Walk, sighs and complaints were flying around...
guessed some of us were really not into walking in a jungle for 3 hours...
the way back to the entrance via the board walk was breezy and nice...

after a change of clothes, we were off to Thomson Roti Prata House for lunch...
the bee hoon goreng i had was too salty... the fried chicken was delicious though...
by the time we reached Keng Hock's car in the multi-storey car park, the rain started to pour...
but by the time we reached Bishan, the rain had miraculously stopped...
and the sun was shining when we left Shaun's place...
perfect day for a perfect workout...
with perfect company...
thanx guys for coming for the walk...
will organise something less strenuous next time...
maybe Sungei Buloh??
hahahaha...

the memories of the last Treetop Walk in 2006 when we were totally drenched in the rain has been replaced...
yeah!!

Saturday...

was on mobilisation standby this weekend...
praying that it will not activate...
anyway, the authorities are all busy with Mas Selamat...
don't think they have time for us...
unless they want to activate us to search for Mas Selamat...
hahahaha...

was home most of the day after taking the cough syrup from the doctor...
didn't know the drowsy effect can be so potent...
was like in a coma...
getting in and out of it...

packed my bag, including my sleeping bag...
headed to Shaun's place in Bishan...
three of us are crashing at his place tonight...
for tomorrow's MacRitchie Treetop Walk...

we had coffee at Coffee Bean and Tea Leaves (CBTL)...
Kenneth bought nuggets from McDonald's...
was told by the CBTL (aka Cee Bey Tu Lan) staff that outside food is not allowed...
we were seated outside CBTL and had already bought drinks and muffins...
what is the big deal about eating nuggets at their premises??
sad that they are trained to follow the books so squarely...

watched the 11:45pm's 10,000 BC...
similar to Apocalypto but less exciting and interesting...
nevertheless, still a watchable movie...

came back, showered, and watched DVD until around 3am...
Shaun, James and i were also playing my Nintendo DS Lite...
solving puzzles...
hahahaha...

7 March 2008

Friday evening bought Canon IXUS 950 for S$599...
came with 2 x 2G SD card, 1 x 4G SD card, card reader, photo printer, case...
also had a camera kit containing a mini tripod, cleaning kit and pouch...

had dinner with Kerry, James and Shaun @ Marina Square Dian Xiao Er...
followed by dessert @ Azabu Sabo...

came home and tried to put on the screen protector...
messed it up...
gonna get another one...
hahahaha...

6 March 2008

Bowling Thursday...

met up with the usual bowling gang...
only managed an average 136 tonight...
very bad...

will strive to do better next week...

4 March 2008

On Leave...

Sydney trip was cancelled...
cancelled my leave for 28 & 29 February...
continued with my leave on Monday and Tuesday...

Monday was out shopping with mum at Orchard...
from OG to Centrepoint to Tangs...
she bought 2 handbags and a pair of shoes...
while i went home empty-handed...
next was her appointment at TTSH...
surprisingly, the appointment took less than an hour...
with the injection to ease the pain in her arm...
and the bandage after that...
no medications for her...

Tuesday i was sick...
been feeling a little ill since Sunday...
somehow the weather took a dip and it was chilly at night...
maybe not enough sleep added to the decline in my immune system...
was at Hougang Point with mum for grocery shopping...
decided to visit the company-appointed doctor there...
kinda impromptu...
doctor's diagnosis was common cold...
with runny nose and cough...
given some medications...

2 March 2008

High Tea @ Equinox...

last minute arrangement to have high tea @ Equinox with the gang...
we were only allowed to take the lift to the 70th storey at 3:30pm sharp...
and the high tea was only 2 hours...
a good selection of food items...
for the price of S$35++, it was worth it...

of course the company of the gang was priceless...
a lot of catching up to do since i last met them three weeks ago, before my Jakarta trip...
now we are all single...
unless Kenneth changes his mind again...
James said that whoever gets attached first will have to buy the rest dinner...
i dare say it will not be me...
