First PT Session @ California

had my first of five Personal Trainer (PT) sessions at California Bugis yesterday night 9pm... i was assigned a senior PT. Eric Goh... he's friendly and knowledgeable... he has to be, right?

after assessing my health and my fitness goals... we immediately started on the machines... we did quite a fair bit of stuff during the 1 hour... he also gave me tips on diet, posture, etc... those weight machines were aliens to me... very intimidating... hopefully i can know how to use them by the time my five free sessions are over

he tried to sell me the PT package... 38 sessions @ S$72 per session... that's a lot of money, boy!! i won't have the luxury to afford that...

one funny episode: while in the shower, i couldn't figure out which dispenser contains the shampoo, conditioner or shower gel cos there were no labels... OMG... after my shower, i went to asked the guys at the towel counter... and was enlightened...

Wet Sunday...

woke up in the morning for the MacRitchie Treetop Walk... just when we were about to reach the Treetop Walk, it started pouring... we didn't allow the rain to dampen our spirits and continued with crossing the bridge in umbrellas and ponchos... mission accomplished in 5.5 hours (inclusive of cleaning / washing up / meals at Thomson Plaza)...

went home, took a shower (to prevent falling sick) and took a short 45-minute nap... woke up at 5pm, dressed up and took a cab to David's place for steamboat... luckily K & S bought food from Holland V and told them to include my share of it... also brought mum's home-made bak zhang for David... let me know if you guys like the bak zhang...

the dinner was great... nice food and good company in a newly-renovated unit... we were watching Singapore Idol 2 while having mango pudding and tiramisu... what a luxury!! thanx to the hosts for everything!!

reached home, showered and proceeded to bed... tired after another eventful weekend... body aching from the workout yesterday and the walk this morning...

27 May 2006

Workout Saturday...

did a lot of things today... had my haircut... and bought my padlock for gym... withdrew money for mum... she was happy cos i gave her 1/6th of my bonus... hahahaha...

rested for a short while before heading to California Orchard for my first workout since i joined... met Kenneth for body combat class... very cardio but the feeling was shiok... met a few friends in the gym... seems like the whole world is with Cali... hahahaha...

after gym we had sandwich at i-Cafe, Cineleisure... $8.50 for a sandwich + any drink... very worth it...

then we were on our way to Ken's place for his bak zhang gathering... quite a number of them there... didn't get to mingle with the entire group though... next time lah...

Love Story Friday...

Kelvin Tong's Love Story was the fifth movie i saw in 7 days... that's a record number of movies for me so far...

decided to watch the movie for two reasons:
1. support Singapore movie industry
2. Kelvin Tong won Best Director

i must say i was disappointed by the movie...
1. for the confusing story where fiction and fact were so mixed up that the audience was lost... it's a very difficult movie to understand...
2. for the bad casting of some local TV celebrities (namely Ericia Lee and Evelyn Tan)... bad acting...

i have to applaud Kelvin Tong for his directorship... there were some impressive shots / sequences... and the use of lights and darkness is also nicely done...

after the movie, Jensen and i had coffee at Starbucks... chatting about life, about relationships, about music, about clubbing, about mobile phones, etc... it's been a while since we last had such a good chat... nice!

"X-Men: The Last Stand" For Superiority Or Equanamity?

Another "Enlightenment thru Entertainment" Dharma-Inspired Movie Review :
"X-Men: The Last Stand" for Superiority or Equanamity?

 www.x-menthelaststand.com

For the unfamiliar, "X-Men" is the name for a band of mutant heroes in the near future, who resolve to use their special superhuman abilities to aid the peaceful bridging of ideological differences between humankind and mutantkind. Before you imagine this to be some kiddy comic book adapted stuff, if you were to let "X" stand for the unknown, the mutant X-gene, which is what biologically causes differences between humans and humans, can be intelligently seen as a multi-faceted metaphor. In the words of Halle Berry (who starred as Storm), "What I like about the X-Men is that the mutant gene could represent pretty much anything - race, sexuality, religion... anything... We all face moments of prejudice on a daily basis and the idea of changing oneself to fit into the 'norm' is preposterous and wrong. Individuality is what makes every one of us interesting and to lose that personal edge is truly sad."

To add to her list of "X" variables, "X" can also stand for sexism, speciesism (the lack of respect for different sentient life-forms, including animals - which lead to animal abuse) or unjust societal caste systems. But does this means every form of "non-norm" should be respected? Why not? Unless it threatens other life-forms - be they of the norm or other "non-norms". Harmony is not just the celebration of similarities; it is also the amicable agreement to disagree. If you are to think of it mindfully, even as non-mutants, we are all mutants or even aliens to each other to various extents due to our many differences in appearance and points of view. As someone once said with great ironical humour, "Never forget that like everyone else, you are unique." Is conformity to the masses or tolerance of the minorities the answer to the problem of prejudice? Is the Middle Path not understanding with compassion and wisdom?

In this third instalment of the X-Men series, humans manage to concoct a supposed but untested "cure" for mutancy. It is seen as a hopeful medicine to restore ordinary humanness in mutants assumed as unnatural - for simply being born with a diverse range of special powers. Being ostracised by the human majority, mutants either see this as a welcomed means of regaining acceptance, or as a hypocritical holier-than-thou means to suppress their birthrights to be who they already are. In the self-righteous words of Magneto (played by Sir Ian McKellen), rebel leader of the Brotherhood of Mutants, "They wish to cure us... but I say we are the cure!" McKellan remarked thus in real life - "Imagine if someone said that black people can take a pill that would 'cure' them of being black. It's silly really." It is probably no coincidence that a great
fraction of X-Men comic fans are blacks, Jews and gays. In the rounds of rebirth, what is truly immutable? If nothing is, then strong attachment to personal identities or that of others, in the light of Anatta (ultimate lack of substantial self-nature), surely causes much suffering.

Magneto, the nemesis of the X-Men, saw mutants as "homo superior", in contrast to "homo sapiens", whom he saw as "homo inferior". Ironically, upon insisting superiority by comparison, not only was he not promoting interspecific harmony, he was widening the gap, which endangered both humans and mutants. Then again, the human persistence to "cure" mutancy first created the gap of non-acceptance of the mutants out of fear. In the words of Storm, "There's nothing to cure, nothing's wrong with any of us for that matter." The end of biasness would be possible when there is no unnecessary comparison, when there is the recognition of each other's common innate Buddha-nature instead, seeing each other as fellow sentient beings with equal rights for happiness. Thus, the real disease in the world of humans and mutants is prejudice, to be cured only by equanamity, trust and respect on both sides.

Seeing the proposal to "cure" mutants as a devious ploy to eventually wipe out all mutants, Magneto leads a revolution to destroy the source of the cure and the humans involved. By another twist of irony, the source is a mutant boy (Leech, played by Cameron Bright), who has the ability to absorb mutant powers. Magneto's ideology becomes senselessly blurred when he was willing to destroy Leech, a fellow mutant, while forsaking Mystique, another fellow mutant in arms, the very moment she was accidentally "cured" to become "one of them" - a human. As if by a stroke of poetic karmic justice, Magneto was injected with the "cure" by the X-Men towards the end of the film. But, just as Storm mentioned, there is probably nothing to cure, as we see his powers subtly restoring later. Surely, the revolution truly needed to end all revolutions is that of mutual empathy of each other's hopes and fears.

A set of X-Men movie publicity posters suggested the greyness of character definition in the movie. Is Professor X (played by Patrick Stewart) a teacher, manipulator or both? Is Magneto a visionary, murderer or both? Is Wolverine (played by Hugh Jackman) an outcast, a hero, or both? Is Storm cursed, gifted or both? Is Angel (played by Ben Foster) alienated, liberated or both? Was Angel, who naturally sprouted wings, deemed demonic till he used them as a guardian angel to save his father from falling off a building? Most importantly, is the tagline of the film - "Whose side will you stand on?" Are we more pacifist in nature like Professor X, or are we more antagonistic like Magneto? Which way truly works? Or do we have to manifest different qualities as and when appropriate, in forms benevolent or malevolent? This reminds us of the peaceful and wrathful manifestations of Buddhist deities in Tibetan Buddhism. Ultimately, we have to be mindful of the intentions behind our choices, and be sure they benefit more than harm.

An intriguing story arc in the show involves the aptly named Phoenix, which in the comics, is described as a
primordial cosmic force of rebirth. As you probably know, the phoenix is a mythological bird which lives for hundreds of years, before incinerating itself in its nest, only to rise from the ashes reborn. The Phoenix is capable of possessing and amplifying individuals' psychic abilities to a cosmic scale. In the movie, the Phoenix is portrayed as the manifestation of the dark side of Jean Grey's (played by Famke Janssen) psyche, which has untapped but vast psychic abilities. A vivid illustration of the potential of the mind, we see Jean tormented, struggling with to cope with the enormous unbridled power in her. This brings to mind the teaching that the mind is truly the most powerful force in the universe, itself capable of destroying entire worlds. As the Buddha advised, "Master the mind or be mastered by mind." Professor X attempts to "cage the beast" within Jean, but as Wolverine warned, "Sometimes when you cage the beast, the beast gets angry." Such is a possible side effect of oppression and suppression. In Buddhism, meditation can be practised instead - to mindfully tame and transform the darker side within us.

Interestingly, the individual mutants can be seen as archetypes of human character. For instance, Professor X, the world's greatest psychic, represents the calm controlled mastery of mind, so much so that that he rises above his physical disability. Pyro, who has the power to shape and throw fire (played by Aaron Stanford), represents hot-tempered recklessness. Iceman (played by Shawn Ashmore), Pyro's polar opposite archenemy, has the power to freeze anything, representing "cool" defensiveness. The Juggernaut (played by Vinnie Jones) represents the drive of brutal impulsiveness. Storm's moods, which can affect the weather, represents how ultimately, our world or immediate environment is made and shaped by our attitudes. The list goes on... Which mutant do you resemble? The Buddha, of course, being the greatest grandmaster of the mind, also has immeasurable psychic powers, probably inclusive of all the mutants'. But even so, he downplays the importance of acquiring these powers, as they are naturally attained when the mind is mastered. To train the mind solely for these powers is to miss the point of acquiring insight into the nature of the mind. It is the wisdom realised that liberates one, not the liberating of psychic powers. Whether a special power is a blessing or a curse is up to how the individual uses it.

It is worth noting that physical evolution is possible only through mutation, even if through gradual and subtle genetic changes. In this sense, mutation is natural. Unnatural mutation is caused by human tampering of genes directly, without mindful consideration of the consequences. Physical advancement in evolution (be it "accidental" or by "natural" mutation) with the acquisition of superhuman powers should be coupled with mental or spiritual evolution to advance compassion and wisdom. If not, it would only jeopardise both the wielder of the power and those it is used upon. Thus is the Buddha in a way a mindfully evolved and perfected being - one who has "hit the roof" of spiritual and physical evolution. Meanwhile, the unenlightened evolve and devolve spiritually, often unmindfully, in the cycles of birth and death. Only when we make concerted efforts to advance spiritually, do we take truly concrete steps towards enlightenment. How are you evolving lately?

Movie Review Spoilers...

decided to do a short review of the two movies i've seen over the last two days...

public announcement: if you are watching X-Men: The Last Stand, please stay until the end of the credits for a teaser...

if you have not seen them, please do not continue if you do not wish to spoil your enjoyment watching them later...

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

even before the movie premiered, there were already so much of controversies over it... from the law suit to prevent the movie from reaching the big screens to the protests by the churches, condemning the movie... too much controversies but then again, aren't we already living in a world of controversies?

went into the theatre without much memories of the book that i've read about a year ago... couldn't even remember the ending... which was good... at least i will be watching the movie with an open mind...

stepped out of the theatre, with mixed feelings... the movie was bad, but probably not _that_ bad... or am i trying to be kind here? lolz...

from the casting of Tom Hanks as the male lead to the draggy and long-winded conversations and dialogues between the characters, the movie was nothing but dull... the sequences of "police-chase-thief" were predictable and nothing fanciful...

of course, the only defence for the long dialogues could be Ron Howard, the director, had to explain a lot of the details of the history of the Holy Grail... from the Templar Knights to the Priory of Scion to the Catholic church to Opus Dei... one simply cannot follow the movie without the explanations... else the audience would be in a daze by the time the movie reaches its climax...

one consolation has to be Ian McKellen as Teabing... such a charming British character...

and i must say a couple of things:
1. The Da Vinci Code is not for the staunch Christians out there... why put yourselves through the torture of doubting a faith you have held dear all along...
2. i want to visit The Lourve... hahahaha...

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

one word to describe the movie: MAGNIFICENT...

impressive special effects, good story line (but lack of further developments between the characters), beautiful cast and amazing mutant powers...

Storm was stunning with the short hair... and Angel was perfect with those wings and 6-pack abs... Jean Grey, what can i say? you took our breaths away with your "get-out-of-my-head" look... Wolverine, still as sissy as ever (i never liked this character since the first X-Men)...

there were so many other mutants in this installment... albeit cameo roles... but i love all of them!!

the scene where Magneto moved the Golden Gate Bridge is nothing but a classic!!

two consecutive days of Ian McKellen... and one conclusion: he is good... very good...

Things Can Only Get Better...

two consecutive late nights...
four movies in five days (Poseidon, Over The Hedge, The Da Vinci Code & X-Men: The Last Stand)...

boy, am i feeling the stretch now...

mum informed me this morning that i kenna 4D...
7244...
starter prize...
S$250 winnings...

performance bonus coming in this Saturday...

the Great Singapore Sale is on soon...

Movie Saturday

after a full day of rest at home with consistent medication, i was feeling much much better today...

was home since the morning... left the house at 4pm... headed to the Singapore Science Centre Omni Theatre for Poseidon: IMAX experience...

despite all the bad reviews i've heard, i actually enjoyed the movie... IMAX is way too cool... the actors and actresses were HUGE... can see every single pore in their face... the special effects were superb... they must have learnt from Titanic... although i was quite disappointed by the epic scene of the sea water crashing into the windows... Titanic was better...

after Poseidon, i was on my way to The Cathay for Over The Hedge, with a 3 other friends... what can i say? Over The Hedge was HILARIOUS!!!!! a MUST-watch!!!!! i adore the skunk, with its very hip-hop black American accent... lolz... it's the best cartoon for this year so far... surpassed Ice Age 2 and The Wild in terms of plot and animation...

after the movie, it was home sweet home... to have enough rest before the Big Walk tomorrow...

19 May 2006

Blading On Mother's Day...

woke up at 9am... the rashes had disappeared, replaced by scratch marks on my thighs and body...

decided to go for my regular Sunday blading... this time i joined the earlier group at 11am... McDonald's was jam packed with the early morning crowd... couldn't get a seat for my breakfast...

bladed with an empty stomach... tough... we first went to the stretch leading to Fort Road... as the sky darkened, we detoured back to base camp (which is the blades rental shop near McDonald's)... as we reached base camp the sky cleared... we then did the other stretch leading to Bedok Jetty... just when we were about to reach PA, droplets fell from the sky... and we had to rush back to base camp once again...

my confidence on blades has increased tremendously... although i had about 4 falls this time, they were not serious... had a small cut on my left little finger and a slight blueblack on my right thumb... i managed the slope to the hawker centre this time... YEAH!!

the session ended early, around 1pm... the rest had to adjourn to tea at a friend's place... i decided to head home to rest... didn't sleep well last night due to the rashes...

slept while waiting for my parents to return from their KL trip...

Happy Mother's Day, Mum...

will get her something to make up for the absence of a Mother's Day dinner... thinking of uZap... anyone tried it before?? any comments??

Dinner

supposed to meet up with Ming and Juliet for dinner tonight at Lau Pa Sat... Juliet just came back from Texas after a 2.5-year posting there and she was craving for local food... couldn't think of anything else except LPS...

received Juliet's SMS in the morning stating that she had to cancel the dinner appointment cos her doctor is putting her through a colon-cleansing programme due to her weight problem... this had caused her to visit the toilets frequently...

i SMSed K about dinner with D and he said i could join them... thanx, pals!!

dinner was at some Chinese restaurant in the Civil Service Club in Bukit Batok... quite a big restaurant, comparable to a five-star hotel ballroom... the menu was fixed for Mother's Day... it was an eight-course dinner... good food... and great company...

i started getting rashes on my hands immediately after dinner... probably due to the tiger prawns... but we couldn't be certain... K passed me some oil to relieve the itch... it worked (for the time being)...

reached home and the itch started again... got worse during my sleep... applied the patches with cream and ointment... was scratching the entire night... and the itch spread to the body and thighs... couldn't sleep... sigh...

Movie Outing: L'enfant

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

missed the post by T about the movie outing... last minute went online to book my own ticket... luckily got it...

simple movie touching on the realities of life in France... and about the love a mother has for her baby versus the challenges life posed for the father... and about how one wrong move led to another, eventually paying a hefty price for one's wrongdoings...

met up with K, S and K for dinner at Plaza Singapura food court for dinner before the show...

after the movie, the whole group of us went to TCC at Paradiz Centre for dinner and drinks...

Vesak Day - MacRitchie Treetop Walk

did a trip to the MacRitchie Treetop Walk... it's my first time to the Treetop Walk...

we started from MacRitchie Nature Trail... reached the Treetop Walk in about 1.5 hours... the view was good but the height was kinda scary... we exited from the Venus Drive route, which was along Upper Thomson Road and was shorter by about 45 minutes...

here are some pics taken during the trip...

Injured Sunday - 20060507

slept at 3:30am... woke up at 10am... so tired... was a little grouchy towards my student... hahahaha...

once tuition ended, i had to shower and rush down to East Coast Park (ECP) for my blading session... bought my pair of MX blades at S$180... the salesboy said that they are clearing the stocks... it has micro-bearing (whatever that is) and the wheels are of 82mm... the two added up simply meant that i'm going to fly in them... the deal was closed in less than 5 minutes... hahahaha...

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

bladed from MacDonald's to Bedok Jetty... along the way, i had a nasty fall... bruised my thighs and hands... the fingers were bleeding... and got blueblack thumbs... hahahaha...

after blading we were at Parkway Parade for dinner... before heading home to rest...

took a short nap after tuition, before leaving the house to meet William from Kuala Lumpur... he's here on a business trip... we had dinner at Jerry's Grill... but that was after i brought William on a tour of Chinatown and Tanjong Pagar, accidentally... lolz... i have to admit that i am not familiar with that area at all...

after dinner we had dessert at Jing Jing (along Temple Street, next to The Inn)... they had 101 varieties of dessert... *jaws dropped*

from 10pm, my mobile was ringing with SMSes on the results of the elections... i lost my covered walkways... but won a drink from a bet that the PAP will win Aljunied GRC...

reached home at 3am... it was drizzling... and i didn't have any covered walkways...

Friday 20060505 - Paul Oakenfold @ Zouk

rushed home after work (and port wine in office)... decided to have my favourite walnut and banana bread for dinner... took some vanilla vodka + root beer before heading to Zouk to meet Kerry and Kit...

there was a slight jam along CTE from Ang Mo Kio Ave 3 to Ang Mo Kio Ave 1 cos cars were going to Serangoon stadium for the Worker's Party final rally before the polls tomorrow...

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

it's my first time in Zouk before 9:10pm... paid our dues and got our stamps... the cover charge before 10pm was S$18... BUT the catch was you have to finish your two drinks before 11pm... tough...

Kit had his dinner at Great World City food court, while Kerry and i had fruits...

we went back to Zouk at around 10:15pm so as to allow ourselves ample time to finish our drinks by 11pm... we had a jug of vodka lime...by which time i was quite hyper... started dancing from 11:30pm... Paul Oakenfold started spinning at 1am... very late lor... his kind of trance music was quite difficult to dance to... didn't really move much... met up with Roy on the dance floor... he was with his friends... Nick was there with his friends too... and he was "dirty-dancing" with a very fat lady as well as another couple...

we left Zouk at 3:30am... had our roti prata at River Valley...

after supper... it was home to sleep...

life goes on... time to stock up on umbrellas... and start to look for flats elsewhere... since i will be eligible to buy a flat once i hit the magical age in November 2007... i really do not wish to be staying in the Bukit Ho Swee of 2010... ;-)
